Wow, this is an eye-opener, although I’m not that surprised. I’m trying to carefully build a new Drupal 7.0 installation that has a minimum of cruft, going over each module for sanity, knowing all the while that there will be some insanity and cruft regardless.

I could in theory write my own CMS using much more sophisticated techniques, but know perfectly well that in reality the project would take at least a hundred times as long as I thought, be buggy as hell, and burn up time desperately needed for other purposes. Thus, the gritted-teeth recognition of the need to use other people’s tools, regardless of the perils.

Having said that, I’d have to agree with Mr. Muit that Drupal sucks less than the alternatives.

It's interesting to compare both of these platforms. I think WordPress is a very different project because the barrier to entry is so low- front end developers, designers, translators, writers, copy editors, etc can all find ways to contribute to the project easily. It's also a low bar for plug-ins and themes, which while not always a good thing, allows new developers to start developing their skills very quickly. And one of the most important reasons people enjoy WordCamps more, is because they open the kegs before noon (at least in Portland). The WordPress project does have its squabbles however, and you are seeing the march of commercialization there as well. WordPress Weekly has been doing some really interesting shows on this subject, which show how commercialization does benefit the larger community and how people react when people start charging for contributions.

I wholeheartedly agree, but would love to see some real discussion in the “Comments” section. Are there any “code cowboys emerging from their mother’s basements” who wish to sing Drupal’s praises on the way through the “double doors at the Mountain Dew Tavern”?

I agree with your point regarding the tools though, use the right tool for the job, no solution is perfect for all situations.

Wow. After seeing a link to this article, I pretty much read your whole blog – captivated by your observations and writing style.

Ofcourse(?) this is not a reason not to use Drupal… because it’s still “the worst solution out there except for all the others”…
But I liked reading your point of view. Especially in such excellent style
